Make your way to the University of Minnesota campus, U of M Regis Center for Art, Foundry, and Metal Shops on Wednesday, February 12. You’ll be fortunate enough to hear Wayne Potratz, Professor and Scholar of the College, talk and show images and video about the Cupola, Iron Sculpture, and the Tatara, Japanese sword smithing.
Pot luck dinner – 6:30 pm, business meeting starts around 7:00 pm followed quickly by tours/demos/discussion, adjourned by 9:00 pm.
Professor Potratz recently hosted an iron ore smelt with Taro Asano, a Japanese swordsmith from Hasima, Japan. He will officially retire in the spring after 44 years as foundry professor at the U of M. He spent those years casting metal and teaching sculpture. His 27th annual (and final) Minnesota Turkey Iron Pour happened on Nov. 26.
Professor Potratz’ foundry is located at 405 21 Avenue South in Minneapolis, in the center of the West Bank of the U of M. Watch for more details about this unique TGoM meeting in the February Forum. For details about Potratz and his remarkable career with the U of M, follow this link:
